Sometimes you just gotta call things what they are. The sky is blue, the grass is green and Ms. Abramovic (Ah-BRAH-moe-vitch) is sick.

Ms. Abramovic is a world renowned artist from Yugoslavia. This 60 year old woman’s portfolio of artistic accomplishments does not include any pieces that you would hang on your living room wall. Her art is perverse because it always performed by herself live and includes the mutilation of her own body. Some of her so-called pieces include her screaming before an audience until she looses her voice; brushing her hair until her scalp bleeds; cutting a star in the flesh of her stomach with a razor blade; or standing still in a museum with 72 objects around her and allowing the observes to poke her, prod her, strip her, mark her and even kill her if they so choose. The New York Time gave this woman a large write up as the city prepared for a 7 day display of her art at the Guggenheim Museum a few years ago. Even this newspaper esteemed her work and calling her a “ground breaking performing artist.”

Reading sections of Marina Abramovic’s autobiographical piece it is clear that there have been things in her life that lie deep bellow the surface. Her words are record in a socratic style as she says that some of the most formative events in her life include being scared of the dark, seeing her father sleeping with a pistol or her mom first purchasing a washing machine. In all of her work, even when writing about herself, she tries to distance herself “to allow her to disengage from the painful attachments she has formed.” This detachment theory seems to be her principle behind all her torturous art. She said, “We are afraid of dying and we are afraid of pain so much, I like to get rid of the fear of pain by staging the pain in front of the audience, going through this pain and showing them that it’s possible. It turns into something else. then you have this energy to it.”

Ms. Abramovic, I am sorry that you think that you have to deal with your past this way. Your works is not art at all; it mocks the master artist – God himself. I wish you knew the freeing blood of Christ so you would not have to continually shed your own in an effort to find fulfillment. I’m sorry that our culture is encouraging your perverted display of emotions by paying to see you brutally mutilate your body.

Moreover, young people, I know that there are many of you that have tried to torture yourself in a way to deal with pain. Don’t do it, Ms. Abrahmovic’s method of dealing with emotion is pure rubbish. Last year I spoke to a young girl that was sent to the hospital and racked up a 10,000 hospital bill because she repetitively slashed her stomach with a razor blade. Or I had a young guy show me how he rubbed his flesh raw as he tried to erase himself with a pencil eraser cause he though he was just one big mistake.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”
